Association

since 2020

The Sursock Palace Association was founded after the Port Explosion of August 4th 2020. The objective is to raise funds and manage the reconstruction and restoration of the Palace. With an unimpeded view of the silos, only about 500m away, the Palace suffered horrendous damage. The façade was about to collapse and the red-tiled roofs were severely puncture. All windows, shutters and doors were shattered leaving the entire edifice open to the elements with severely damaging art collections, elaborate plaster ceilings and wall decoration.

The damaged façade and waterproofing the building were secured by the help of many local and international NGOs. The Swiss government through UNESCO is partly financing the reconstruction of the North façade and adjoining roofs. The British Council through Beirut Heritage Initiative is partly financing the restoration of the South façade and adjoining roofs. The Association, an equal partner to UNESCO and the British Council, supplements the cost that is not covered to complete the work. The Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Swizzera Italiana in collaboration with RestArt Beirut, was invited twice to consolidate some of the damaged plaster ceilings.

Some paintings, tapestries, glass bottles, furnitures, carpets and selected art pieces were sent for restoration to Los Angeles, Florence, Rome, Bruxelles, New York, Tripoli and South Lebanon. The aim is to bring back the Palace to its former glory even better. Although, it will remain a family home, it will be open for touristic tours, same was done to historical homes worldwide.
